Wendy rolled over onto her side and snuggled her nakedness against the equally naked body lying beside her.

‘This so works,’ she said, a dreaminess in her voice that gave her a sexy undertone.

‘Certainly does,’ Owain Jesmond said, his Welsh accent a lilt in her ear. ‘It could work forever, my love, if you’d only say yes.’

She pulled away from him slightly. ‘You know I can’t say yes. He’s evil, Owain, and he’d come after us, Jess and me. I’m not sure I can protect us both.’

‘I can protect you.’

‘Not when you’re at work, you can’t. Let’s not spoil today by arguing about this again. Mike is my husband, and that’s the way it will have to stay. If you can’t take that, and remember I made it clear at the start that that was the status quo, then we have to walk away from each other right now, before we get in any deeper.’

‘I’m in for keeps anyway,’ he said and leaned across to kiss her.

And kiss her.

It was only the small cry on the monitor that separated them, and Wendy slipped on Owain’s T-shirt to go to her baby daughter. They had only been together a week when Owain had set up his spare room as a nursery for the little girl, and Wendy lifted her out of the pink cot and carried her through to Owain’s bedroom.

‘Sorry,’ Wendy said, ‘she’s wide awake. I’ve no chance of getting her back to sleep.’

He held up his arms to the baby and she reached for him. ‘Come here, sweetheart, let’s have a two-minute cuddle, then we’ll maybe take you for a walk.’ He looked at Wendy and she nodded, blessing the day Owain had catapulted into her life.
